Gilbert was founded by James Gilbert in Rugby, England. The company was the official supplier of balls to the Rugby School in 1823 when William Webb Ellis picked up a ball and ran with it in a fine disregard of the rules of football. Since those early beginnings Gilbert became synonymous with the sport of Rugby itself. Today Gilbert supplies balls to the top level teams and events, including the World Cup and the Heineken Cup, as well as national teams.
